An Introduction to the Smallest Dog Breed in the World - Chihuahua

Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dogs. They are believed to have
originated in Mexico during the sixteenth century. The average Chihuahua
stands at an average 20.3 cm. Due to their small size, they are
classified in the Toy group. If well taken care of and healthy, a
Chihuahua can live for nearly twenty years. Other distinct features
include a tiny tail, muscular bones, short muzzle, and large, dark eyes.
When fully alert, a Chihuahua's ears tend to stand erect. Their coats
can be either smooth or long and wavy, and the colour can be brown, red,
gold, or patterned.
Chihuahuas, as cute as they are, can be feisty little things when
provoked or upset. Still, they make wonderful companions for those who
treat them right. They can be very affectionate to their owners if the
owner takes good care of them and gives them all the attention they
need. They are wary toward strangers and other dogs, and aren't the
best choice for those who won't be able to handle loud barking.
Chihuahuas give meaning to the phrase, “the smaller the dog, the louder
the bark.” Also, Chihuahuas aren't the best pets for small children,
either. Sometimes children may play too roughly with such a small dog
and accidentally cause harm to it. Likewise, a Chihuahua can bite a
small child. They are best pets for older children and adults who have
the time and means to care for them.
As for grooming, Chihuahuas have minimal needs. They are known to
take good care of their own coats, although owners can still wipe and
brush them occasionally. Those with longer coats should be brushed once
a day, however. Fortunately, they're so small that a good brushing won't
take very long at all. It's recommended that they be bathed at least
once a month, and that owners should take special care not to get water
in their ears. They need to be warmed immediately after exiting the
shower, as Chihuahuas do not like being cold. They don't mind wearing
sweaters on cold days, either.

All in all, Chihuahuas are a rather healthy, fun, and hyper breed.
They don't require a whole lot of care, although owners need to make
sure they make time everyday for playing with---and walking---their
Chihuahuas. They can be very loving and affectionate, just as long as
they are treated kindly. They can also be a bit loud and feisty at
times, but that only adds to their charm. |
